Mrs PN is a shotgun licence holder, earlier this month there was an altercation at her home address between her husband and another individual. The altercation became heated and potentially violent and as a result the police were called.

Upon arrival at the house the Police uplifted Mrs PN’s shotguns and indicated that they were minded to revoke her shotgun licence under section 30(c)(1) of the Firearms Act 1968.

Mrs PN contacted specialist shotgun licence lawyer Quentin Hunt upon receiving this news in order to try to preserve her licence. Quentin is a Barrister who specialises in shotgun licence appeals, both in respect of the refusal to issue a shotgun licence and in respect of the revocation of a shotgun licence.

Quentin spoke to PN in conference and ascertained the details of the dispute that she was embroiled in as well as taking instructions on other matters that are relevant to the retention of her shotgun licence.

Following the conference, Quentin immediately discovered who the firearm liaison officer was dealing with PN’s case. He sent written representations to the officer as to why this matter was unsuitable for a revocation in the circumstances and followed up with a number of lengthy telephone calls to plead his client’s case.

The representations were successful and the Police agreed that, in the light of Quentin’s submissions they had reviewed their decision and that Mrs PN could keep her shotgun licence. The guns were returned later that week.

Swift and early intervention is important in shotgun licence cases. Effective representation at an early stage can result in the licence holder having their guns returned. This avoids a potentially lengthy and costly shotgun licence appeal in the Crown Court.

If you are in a situation where your shotgun licence is to be revoked or you have been refused a shotgun licence then it is often worth seeking specialist legal advice at an early stage.  Quentin Hunt is a shotgun licencing lawyer who specialises in dealing with such matters.
