Background to the allegations
Quentin was instructed by MPR Solicitors to represent Mr TS, an individual who stood accused of two counts of rape contrary to section 1 (1) of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 as well as a single count of conspiracy to arrange or facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, (otherwise known as human trafficking) contrary to contrary to sections 2(1) and 5(1) of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and section 1(1) of the Criminal Law Act 1977 .
The prosecution case was that TS was part of an ‘Asian grooming gang’ who were responsible for grooming, trafficking and sexually exploiting vulnerable young women. TS denied the charges, he did not accept that he was responsible for rape and was not part of any trafficking conspiracy.
The scale of the prosecution evidence
The case has achieved considerable press coverage nationally and internationally. The evidence was huge in scale with over 10,000 pages of evidence relied upon by the prosecution together with large amounts of CCTV and video evidence and over 12,000 pages of disclosure material. Quentin, together with his instructing solicitors, considered the prosecution materials and unused material in considerable detail, putting together a compelling narrative that cast considerable doubt over the prosecution case.
Trial at Cardiff Crown Court
The matter proceeded to trial before a jury at the Cardiff Crown Court. The case involved considerable sensitivity, particularly with vulnerable witnesses who needed to be cross examined very carefully on behalf of TS.
Quentin’s approach to the case was a success. Matters concluded with TS being acquitted with the jury returning Not Guilty verdicts against TS on all counts.
